Cannabinol aka CBD is having a major moment in the wellness space as of late. One of many naturally-occurring compounds that exist in the cannabis plant, CBD is closely related to THC, but unlike THC, does not bind to the neural receptors that are responsible for making us high.
What’s interesting is that the human body actually produces its own cannabinoids similar to the compounds found in cannabis plants. Our bodies’ endocannabinoid system is a complex network that helps regulate sleep, mood, appetite, our immune system, and pain. Using CBD enhances our own endocannabinoid system by tempering chronic pain and inflammation, as well as helping with depression and anxiety.
The research around CBD is promising and exciting, but in a fledgling market, with a large range of brands, product types, strengths, infusion methods and online retailers to choose from, it’s our responsibility to do our own research. Learning about the endocannabinoid system, to better understand how our bodies react to THC and CBD as well as looking for companies that use CBD from trusted farms are a good place to start.
Here are a few factors to help you choose the right product for you.
Concentrations:
CBD, whether sold as oil in capsules or tincture, can come in a range of concentrations. As a first-time hemp oil user, it’s best to start with a low to moderate concentration such as a 250mg or 500mg tincture or 10mg or 25mg capsules. Over time, you can adjust your dosage of hemp oil as you become more experienced and familiar with its effects.
Varieties:
CBD comes in two varieties: isolate, which only contains one isolated compound, and full-spectrum, whole-plant hemp oil, which contains a variety of other active ingredients in addition to the key ingredient. While an oil made with an isolated compound might seem tempting, data shows that there are numerous benefits to using a full spectrum hemp oil known as the entourage effect.
